●Shikiita Kawaraita (floor board) is one of the floor boards that is placed under a brazier, and is a ceramic board.
Also called shikigawara (tile), it is used on iron braziers.
Oribe ware is mainly used, but Raku ware, Shino ware, Shigaraki ware, Tamba ware, Bizen ware, etc. are also used. Old roofing tiles may also be used.
It is said that the tile panels began when the seventh head of the Omotesenke school, Joshinsai, received tiles from the flower bed of Sunshoan at Daitokuji Temple, laid them under a round iron kettle brazier, and combined them with the Daiamida Hall kettle made by Yojiro as a vestige of the temple's name; these are known as Sunshoan tiles or Sunshoan floor tiles.
The Sunshoan tile was made to be used as a retaining wall for the flower bed in Sunshoan, the retirement home that Sakuma Shogen (1570-1642) established in his later years at Ryukoin Temple, Daitoku-ji Temple, by Sakuma Shogen (1570-1642), a page to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and who later served three generations of Tokugawa lords, from Ieyasu to Iemitsu, and was also a tea master.Only the upper half of the tile is covered with green glaze, while the lower part, which will be buried in the flower bed, is left bare and has a raised edge at the very bottom to prevent it from falling over.
It is said that the first Raku ware floor tiles were made when Joshinsai ordered Rakuchoiri to make a square tile with gold arabesque pattern on the front side using Seiraku.
The floor boards are classified into large, small and round boards according to their shape, and there are various boards depending on the type of furo, style and preference, such as shinnuri, kakiawase, arame and kanname. There are also ceramic floor tiles.
