● Willows are green and flowers are red (Yamagi wa midori wa nakurenai)… The willows have green branches and red flowers are in full bloom. At first, all you can see is the difference in the various phenomena.
After completing the training, one can see things as they really are, but it is a completely different world than what one saw at the beginning.
●Kouunryusui (flowing clouds and flowing water)... A metaphor for acting without getting too attached to things and just going with the natural course of events. It is also a metaphor for not having a fixed form, but instead changing naturally and smoothly. ▽ "Kouun" means clouds passing through the sky. "Ryusui" means flowing water. It is also sometimes used as an analogy for Zen monks who travel around the country practicing.
● Matsu ni, kokono iro nashi (Pine has no color, past or present)…A couplet that translates to "Pine has no color, past or present, bamboo has upper and lower knots." No matter how many years pass, a pine remains green and its color never changes.
