It is important to feel content and not dissatisfied.
These characters were carved into a basin donated to Ryoanji Temple by Tokugawa Mitsukuni (Mito Komon), and the word spread from there.
The tsukubai has a square hole in the middle, with a five-pointed dove on the top, a hawk on the right, the bottom (excluding the foot opening), and an arrow on the left.
The one on display is a replica located on the north side of the hojo, but the original is said to be kept in the tea room "Kurokuan", which is not open to the public.
