●With the wisdom of the monkey, who resembles a gourd, he will subdue the catfish in his true heart...This design was originally devised from the Zen painting "Gourd and Catfish," a designated National Treasure, and in Otsu-e it has been adapted to show a monkey holding down a catfish with a gourd.
As it is originally a Zen painting, its meaning can be interpreted in various ways, but it is generally seen as a moral painting that warns against trying to do things that are not reasonable.
