●What is a chameshi kettle? It is one type of kettle used for tea ceremonies, with a large, wide mouth, wings, and a round bottom, shaped like a rice cooking kettle.
It is used for tea ceremonies and consists of a large straight-line lid, a snake-eye lid with a hole in the center, and a small lid placed in the center. The large straight-line lid is used when cooking rice, and the snake-eye lid and small lid are used when making tea.
How to handle the kakidachi kan (ring): Place the kakidachi kan with the kakidachi part facing down, with the ring floating, and place it in front of you, with the ring floating, in the temae. The only time you should turn the kakidachi kan to the other side is while you are placing the tea towel in the temae.
The original poem is said to have been a gift from Sotan to his disciple Zeniya Sotoku, and is also known as the Sotoku Kettle. It is made from the words "uekitaritemeshi" (rice brought by hunger) and "kawakikitaritecha" (tea brought by dryness) from Seigan Sowei, Sotan and Sotoku's Zen teacher. Sotoku used this one kettle all his life to cook rice, boil water, and make tea, and for this reason he was known as One Kettle Sotoku, and also took the name Jizaian Iskasai.
