●How to place the Tachibana and Sakura flowers on the Hinamatsuri decorations
Facing the stage, the left side is "Tachibana" and the right side is "Sakura".
"Sakuno Sakura, Ukon Tachibana" means that March 3rd is remembered as Sakon no Sakura (Sangatsumikka is Sakon no Sakura).
On the right, Sakon's cherry blossoms, and on the left, Ukon's Tachibana. Why are they reversed?
The secret lies in the Emperor's Takamikura and the Shishinden Hall of the Kyoto Imperial Palace.
In the South Hall (Shishinden) of Heian Palace, in the center is the Emperor's throne, Takamikura, and to the east is the Empress's throne, Michodai.
And there are cherry blossoms and tangerines planted in the front yard.
When we look at it from the outside, facing the Shishinden Hall, we see Ukon no Tachibana on the left and Sakon no Sakura on the right.
If we consider the Emperor looking at the south-facing garden from the Imperial Palace side with his back to the north, the side where the sun rises is the "East" = upper left = [Cherry Blossom], and the side where the sun sets is the "West" = lower right = [Tachibana].
Therefore, "Sakono Sakura, Ukonno Tachibana" is correct.
