●What is Chinkin? It is a technique in which a pattern is shallowly hand-carved into a lacquered item with a chisel, the indentations are then covered with lacquer, and gold, silver or platinum powder is sprinkled on top to fill them in.
The lacquer acts as an adhesive, and when the surface of the lacquerware is wiped off, only the gold that was printed in the carved areas remains, and the gold pattern appears to float in the background, making it look like the gold is submerged.
