[Sliding door painting at Jukōin Temple]
[Shohaori woven bamboo and tiger design fabric]
With permission from Reverend Todo Onozawa, we have carefully produced a Shobaori reproduction of the painting "Bamboo Tiger and Monkeys Playing," taken from the National Treasure "Bamboo Tiger and Monkeys Playing," which is a sliding door painting in the "Ibachi no Ma" room of the main hall of Jukoin, a subtemple of Daitokuji, the head temple of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism.
The sliding door painting on the east side of this room is either a painting from the Momoyama period or a masterpiece by Kano Shoshoei, the father of Kano Eitoku.
With a spring breeze blowing through the bamboo forest in the background, the male tiger calmly watches over his cub, while the female tiger leaps into action on the water's edge with rough waves crashing against it, creating a composition overflowing with life.
