[Sliding door painting at Jukōin Temple]
[Shohaori Yuenzu Kiri (Painting of Monkeys Playing)]
With permission from Reverend Todo Onozawa, we have carefully produced a Shohaori reproduction of the painting "Bamboo Tiger and Monkeys at Play" from the sliding door painting "Ibachi no Ma" in the main hall of Jukoin, a subtemple of Daitokuji, the head temple of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism.
This sliding door painting is a masterpiece by Kano Shōei, the father of the Momoyama period painter Kano Tokunaga. On the south side of the sliding door, against the backdrop of distant mountain streams and a cluster of chrysanthemum bamboo, it depicts an expressive depiction of a married couple of monkeys lovingly holding a baby, as well as other monkeys playing in a persimmon tree.
