●A gong is a metal percussion instrument with a round tray shape and a slightly bulging hemisphere in the middle.
A string is attached to the edge and it can be hung from the ceiling or attached to a wooden frame called a dora-waku, or it can be held by hand and the hemispherical bulge in the center is struck with a bai (a wooden drum) which is a leather-wrapped ball with a handle, to let the host know that the guests, who are waiting seated and waiting, are ready for the tea ceremony.
It is said that it was called "dora" because it is a copper gong, and that this later changed to "dora".It is also written as "鐃" or "鉦".
Those made with a copper and tin alloy and covered with sand are said to produce the most excellent tone.
There are large, medium and small ways to hit, and the strength and speed can be varied.
Generally, in Omotesenke, the bell is struck on seven points for small-room tea ceremonies, with the first being "large, small, large, small, medium, medium, large." In large-room tea ceremonies, a bell is struck. In Urasenke, the bell is struck on five points for small-room tea ceremonies (five guests or less), with the second being "large, small, large, small, medium, medium, large," and in large-room tea ceremonies (five guests or more), with the third being "large, small, large, small, medium, medium, large."
During night talk, a wake-up call is rung.
