Kariyado Gebazakura Cherry Blossoms
This is the oldest Maya cherry tree in Japan, over 800 years old, and is known as "Kariyado no Shimoumazakura" (Kariyado Shimoumazakura) because legend has it that Minamoto no Yoritomo stopped here during the Fuji Makigari hunting expedition in 193.
The 15th shogun, Tokugawa Yoshinobu, wrote about this cherry tree, "How pitiful, this mountain cherry tree connects the hearts of not only the horse but also those who see it."
It was designated a national natural monument in 1992 and a special natural monument in 1952.
