What are the Ten Craftsmen of the Senke?
It is an honorific title for ten craftsmen, including lacquerers and joiners, who are involved in the tea ceremony and frequent the three Sen schools (Omotesenke, Urasenke, and Mushakojisenke). It was reorganized into the current ten craftsmen during the Meiji period. (There is also a theory that it was named by Mitsukoshi Department Store during the Taisho period.)
Who is Yuko Tsuchida?
After giving up his samurai career, he became a Nishijin textile broker under the name "Echigoya Hanbei." He also trained in the tailoring of bags, and was taken in by the sixth head of the Omotesenke school, Kakukakusai, to begin sewing tea caddy covers.
From the second generation onwards, the head of the family was commonly known as Hanshiro, and when he retired and shaved his head he took the name Tomoko. Up until the fifth generation, the family was a bag maker specialising in making shifuku (seals), and the 12th generation (succeeded in 1965) currently makes shifuku (seals) for tea caddies, hakama (cloths), and kaku obi (belts) for tea ceremony utensils.
