[Corporate History]
Akatsu ware originated as Sueki ware from the early Nara period, and is counted as one of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan. It is a type of Seto ware made with glazes from the Sanage area.
It is said that this region was the only place that used glazes during the Kamakura period, and in the subsequent Azuchi-Momoyama period, influenced by the development of the tea ceremony, the techniques that form the basis of modern Akatsu ware, such as Shino and Oribe, were established.
【Features】
Akatsu ware is characterized by its seven types of glazes - Oribe glaze, Shino glaze, Kizeto glaze, Kozeto glaze, Kai glaze, Ofuke glaze, and Iron glaze - and its 12 diverse decorative techniques, including spatula carving, floral printing, kushime, and Mishimade.
Making full use of these techniques, a wide range of items are fired, from tea ceremony utensils and flower arrangement utensils to household items.
[Manufacturing process]
The piece is shaped using a potter's wheel, Tatara molding, or hand-formed, then finished and dried, before being painted or glazed and fired.
Generally, we do not bisque fire the pottery.
After firing, Oribe ware is removed from the surface using acorn shavings (acorn shavings).
[Designated as a traditional craft]
Date of designation: 7th designation: March 30, 1977
