Gozu Tenno is the god of plague
He is the deity enshrined at Gion Shrine, the origin of the Gion Festival, and is also said to be the guardian deity of Gion Shoja and an incarnation of Yakushi Nyorai.
He was revered and assimilated with Susanoo-no-Mikoto as a god who wards off epidemics and disasters.
Gozu Tenno and Somin Shorai
While Gozu Tenno was traveling, he was lied to by the richest man in the world, Gotan, and was refused lodging.
Next, Somin Shorai, who was poor but kind-hearted, gave him a place to stay.
Before leaving, we were told to wear a piece of wood with the words "Somin Shorai" written on it.
Meanwhile, thanks to the wooden tablet, Somin became a rich man and lived happily ever after.
Gozu Tenno was a god who drove away evil.
Nowadays, talismans from this tree are attached to shimenawa ropes, and since I am also a descendant of Somin, many houses have signs on their entrances that read "Somin Future Descendant."
