What is Amabie?
A monster that appeared in Higo (Kumamoto) during the Edo period.
It looks like a mermaid and has a bird-like beak.
Legend has it that she vanished into the sea, saying, "If any disease breaks out, show people this picture of me."
Regarding the name "Amabie," there has only been one recorded sighting, and the meaning of the name is unknown, so one theory has been proposed that it is a misspelling of a similar yokai called "Amabiko."
Amabiko is a three-legged monkey-like monster found mainly in the Kyushu region that is said to make predictions and ward off illness.
It is written as Amahiko, Amahiko, Amahiko, Amahiko, Amahiko, Umihiko, etc.
